Yogi government building state’s first AYUSH university in Gorakhpur
Gorakhpur| The construction work of the state’s first AYUSH University in Gorakhpur, which is earning fame as the City of Knowledge, is expected to be completed by the end of this month. In this university named after Mahayogi Guru Gorakhnath, along with traditional courses on all medical systems related to AYUSH, unique courses will also be run as per the needs of today’s era.
Regarding this, on the instructions of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, officials of the AYUSH department are engaged in comparative study of AYUSH courses being run in other states of the country, so that more new courses can be drafted. At present, a plan has been prepared to run a dozen courses including PhD.
The foundation stone of Mahayogi Guru Gorakhnath Ayush University being built on an area of 52 acres at Pipri in Bhathat was laid by then President Ramnath Kovind on 28 August 2021. AYUSH University is one of the dream projects of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. After laying the foundation stone, he has come here several times and taken stock of the construction work. Now its construction is almost complete. The few finishing-related works that remain are also expected to be completed by 30 November 2024.
Before coming into existence of AYUSH University, there were different institutions for the medical systems of Ayurveda, Unani, Homeopathy, Naturopathy, Yoga, Siddha, which are called AYUSH in a coordinated form. From the session 2021-22, all the state and private AYUSH colleges of the state are now regulated by AYUSH University only. In the current session 2024-25, 97 colleges/institutions of AYUSH teaching (Ayurveda, Homeopathy and Unani) of the state are affiliated to this university. Overall, about seven thousand students of undergraduate and postgraduate courses are studying in all these colleges in this session.
Mahayogi Guru Gorakhnath Ayush University Vice Chancellor Prof. AK Singh says that as per the intention of the Chief Minister, many more employment-oriented courses will be started as per the time along with graduation and post-graduation. The upcoming action plan prepared by AYUSH University regarding the courses includes PhD, B.Sc Nursing Ayurveda, B. Pharma Ayurveda, B. Pharma Homeopath, B. Pharma Unani, Panchakarma Assistant Diploma, Panchakarma Therapist Diploma, Diploma for Foreign Students, Ksharsutra Diploma, Agnikarma Diploma, Uttarvasti Diploma and Yoga Naturopathy Diploma. Apart from this, some certificate courses will also be started.
The AYUSH OPD at AYUSH University was launched by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on 15 February 2023. Since then an average of 300 patients consult the OPD of Ayurveda, Homeopathy and Unani here every day. After the launch of OPD, till now consultation benefits have been taken from about one lakh AYUSH doctors. Now soon, with the opening of AYUSH hospital here, excellent treatment facilities like Ayurveda, Unani, Homeopath Yoga, Naturopathy etc. will also start becoming available.
Promotion of AYUSH medical system will also create employment opportunities in AYUSH health tourism. If serious work is done on this, then the people of the villages around this first AYUSH University of the state can be linked to some form of employment. The full functioning of AYUSH University will also pave the way for the prosperity of farmers and employment for the youth. People will be able to earn additional income by collecting herbs growing nearby. Farmers will get more benefits from medicinal farming. AYUSH University can become a factor of employment and positive change on a large scale.
