Ford will return to India to increase exports, will provide jobs to three thousand people
New Delhi| American automaker Ford Motor is making a comeback in India. The company will restart its manufacturing plant in Chennai to boost exports. It will also recruit 2,500-3,000 additional staff. K Hart, president of Ford International Markets Group, said the move is “intended to underline our commitment to India as we seek to leverage the manufacturing expertise available in Tamil Nadu for new global markets”. He said in a post on LinkedIn that the company has submitted a “Letter of Intent” to the Tamil Nadu government in India outlining the use of our Chennai plant for manufacturing for export purposes. This announcement has been made after several rounds of meetings of top officials of the company with the Tamil Nadu government. Ford Motor ceased its operations in the year 2021 due to low sales and losses in the highly competitive domestic vehicle market.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin had posted on social media platform X and wrote that he had a very interesting discussion with the team of Ford Motor. “Explored the feasibility of reviving Ford’s three-decade-old partnership with Tamil Nadu, to build again in Tamil Nadu for the world”, he said.
The Chief Minister also visited the headquarters of Google, Apple and Microsoft and signed MoUs with these tech giants for investment in Tamil Nadu. According to Hart, the decision will increase Ford’s growing employee base in Chennai.
“Our global Ford Business Solution team based there already has over 12 thousand members and we plan to add between 2,500 and 3,000 additional members over the next few years”, Hart said Ford’s engine manufacturing team is also located in Sanand, Gujarat. After America, the company has the highest number of employees in India.
