Beneficial uses of AI in the Supreme Court, many tasks including translation of judgment get easier now

AI is soon going to help in translating judicial documents of the Supreme Court to legal research. Also, many processes of the country’s largest court will be made easier through this new technology. Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal has given this information while giving a written reply to a question asked in the Lok Sabha.
Let us tell you, since February 2023 last year, AI is also being used to write oral arguments in constitutional bench cases. The Union Minister said that a committee has been formed for this, which is headed by a judge of the Supreme Court. This committee has been formed to translate important judgments of the Supreme Court and High Court in various Indian languages through AI.
Apart from this, the AI Translation Committee of the High Court is proactively monitoring the translation of important decisions of the Supreme Court and the High Court into Indian languages. At present, e-High Court Report (e-HCR) has been launched for eight High Courts. At the same time, preparations are being made for other High Courts also. These Supreme Court-led AI committees have also directed the High Courts to request their respective state governments to translate all central and state laws, rules and regulations into regional languages and make them available on state websites.
The Union Minister told the Parliament that at this time, the work of translating 36,271 judgments of the Supreme Court into Hindi has been completed by 5 August 2024 using AI. At the same time, 17,142 judgements have been translated into 16 other regional languages. However, no separate fund has been allocated for this translation project.
The government is also going to use AI for surveillance. Security agencies are preparing to deploy AI based security system to conduct surveillance in the area around the Red Fort on the occasion of this 68th Independence Day. CCTV with video analytic feature has been installed in major areas around the Red Fort.
