Delhi Rain: Roof collapses at Delhi airport’s Terminal-1, one dead, several injured, compensation announced

New Delhi| Due to heavy rain in Delhi-NCR, the roof of the parking lot at Terminal-1 of Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) collapsed at 5 am on Friday. One cab driver was killed in the accident while 8 people were injured. The injured are undergoing treatment at Medanta Hospital. Teams of Delhi Fire Service, Police, CISF and NDRF are engaged in relief and rescue operations on the spot.

Delhi Fire Service (DFS) officials said that there was high rush in the parking area for domestic flights at Terminal-1 in the morning. Meanwhile the parking roof collapsed. Heavy sections of the roof and three iron support beams also fell on the carriages. During this time the cars parked here got buried in the beam.

Civil Aviation Minister K. Ram Mohan Naidu reached Delhi airport after the incident and took stock of the situation. Naidu said that rescue teams are working at the spot. Flight operations at Terminal-1 are suspended until further orders. The Union Minister announced a compensation of Rs 20 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased and Rs 3 lakh each to the injured.
