United Nations released additional funds for war torn Lebanon

New Delhi| The situation in Lebanon is continuously worsening due to Israeli attacks. In view of this, Imran Riza, the UN humanitarian coordinator for Lebanon, has announced an additional $2 million from the ‘Lebanon Humanitarian Fund. Stephane Dujarric, a spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said on Friday that with this new fund the total allocation so far came to $12 million. Let us tell you that recently a Central Emergency Response Fund of $10 million was also announced.

Dujarric said. “The World Health Organization (WHO) informed that the first flight, with medical supplies, reached Beirut. This medical help is enough to treat thousands of injured people. More flights have been planned in the coming days.” The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, concerned about the safety and well-being of civilians as Lebanon continues to witness increased air strikes and displacement. Israeli air strikes once again took place overnight in residential areas of Beirut, injuring rescue workers. Attacks continued in other parts of Lebanon.

“The impact that this campaign has had on civilians is unacceptable”, Dujarric said He appealed to all parties to make every possible effort to protect civilians and infrastructure. The spokesperson said the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has reported that in their area of operations, air strikes and heavy clashes are being observed. “The UNIFIL peacekeepers remain in their location despite the dangerous environment”, Dujarric said. He recalled that the security of United Nations peacekeepers was the first priority and that it was the shared responsibility of all parties.

The UN spokesperson said UNIFIL urgently reiterates its appeal for de-escalation, for the parties to cease hostilities immediately and for the prior implementation of Security Council resolution 1701.
