In a first-of-its-kind initiative to integrate traditional skills with modern technology, the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises has trained over 2,500 artisans across the country in the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools under the PM Vishwakarma Scheme.

The programme, aimed at empowering grassroots craftspeople, is aligned with the government’s vision of leveraging AI for social good. It focuses on helping artisans enhance their livelihoods by adopting digital tools for business growth, marketing, and customer engagement.

According to the Ministry, more than 2,500 beneficiaries from diverse trades participated in the training, which was conducted through practical, hands-on sessions designed in simple language and tailored to local contexts. Participants were introduced to widely used AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Indus, enabling them to apply technology in real-world scenarios.

The training covered key areas including branding, product design, packaging, digital marketing strategies, and improving business efficiency through AI-enabled solutions. Artisans also learned to create AI-generated product descriptions and visual content, helping them expand their reach to new markets.

The initiative saw participation from multiple states and Union Territories, with the highest number of beneficiaries from Telangana, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Bihar. In total, 2,543 artisans were trained under the programme.

The Ministry said the effort is aimed at bridging the digital divide for traditional workers while enhancing the value and global competitiveness of their products. By combining heritage craftsmanship with modern technology, the initiative seeks to open new economic opportunities and support sustainable, inclusive growth.

The Ministry noted that the programme represents a significant step toward transforming India’s artisanal sector into a digitally empowered ecosystem capable of competing in global markets.
