More than one crore jobs increased in one year in the unorganized sector; 10 per cent growth

New Delhi| More than one crore people got employment in the unorganized sector enterprises of the country in one year. That is, employment increased by 10%. The number of unorganized enterprises also increased by more than 12% during this time. This brought the number of employment in this sector to cross 12 million. At the same time, the total number of unorganized sector establishments increased to 7.34 crore in 2023-24 as against 6.50 crore in 2022-23.
The Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation of the Central Government conducted an annual survey of non-agricultural unorganized enterprises for the period between October, 2023 to September, 2024, the findings of which show the healthy growth of the unorganized sector. The survey shows that more than 12 crore people were employed in enterprises in this sector in this period, which is one crore more than a year ago. This explains the strong growth of the labor market.
The number of women-owned establishments in the unorganized sector has increased from 22.9 per cent in 2022-23 to 26.2 per cent this year. That is, there has been a jump of 14% in the number of women entrepreneurs. This shows the increasing interest and dominance of women in business. Average remuneration per employee increased by 13% in 2023-24 compared to the year 2022-23, which is important sign of improvement in wage levels. This wage growth acts as a catalyst, strengthening the labor market, boosting macroeconomic demand.
There is good news on the employment as well as earnings front in the unorganized sector. The highest increase in average remuneration per employee compared to the year 2022-23 was seen in the manufacturing sector, which grew by slightly more than 16 per cent. According to the survey of the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation, between October, 2023 to September, 2024, the unorganized sector had the highest strong employment gain of 17.86 per cent in other service sectors, while the manufacturing sector stood second, with 10.03 per cent employment growth. During this period, the number of establishments in the other services sector increased by 23.55 per cent. The manufacturing sector then saw a 13 per cent increase. This significant growth highlights the continuous regional expansion and reaffirms the important role of the sector in furthering the overall development of the unorganized sector.
According to the survey, the percentage of establishments using the Internet has also increased from 21.1 per cent in 2022-23 to 26.7 per cent in 2023-24. The success of the efforts of the Central Government to increase digital reach across the country is visible in this. Along with this, there is also increasing dependence on the Internet for business operations.
