India’s maths talent and educational research institutes will be useful in doing something big: Satya Nadella

New Delhi| Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella, who recently reached India, spoke about leading research in AI. Nadella said India should take advantage of its strong ‘Math talent base’ on AI. When asked whether India should invest in AI research or not, Nadella praised the country’s mathematical talent and academic skills.

Nadella said, “There is no single reason for India not doing pioneering work”. India should come forward. I don’t think the last major breakthrough with AI ever happened. As I always say, we are just one mathematical success away from a great success. We will do something different. India has maths talent, educational institutions and research institutes, which will be useful in doing something big next”

Union Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Jitin Prasad, in a conversation with Nadella, warned about the risks of AI, including ‘fake content’. At the same time, emphasis was laid on the government’s commitment to strike a balance between innovation and regulation.

“Right now we are in favor of innovation and the current laws and guidelines we have are more about self-regulation than where companies like Microsoft come to trust”, he warned. if the challenges become bigger, the government will not hesitate to bring in new laws.

Apart from this, Satya Nadella also announced several AI partnerships in the country, including an MoU with the government’s ‘India AI Mission’ to provide skills to 5 lakh people. Under the MoU, Microsoft and ‘India AI’ will together provide skills to 5,00,000 individuals, including students, teachers, developers, government officials and women entrepreneurs, by 2026.
