The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the Jaipur Metro Phase-2 project, a major infrastructure initiative aimed at transforming urban mobility in Rajasthan’s capital.

The project entails the development of a 41-kilometre-long North–South metro corridor from Prahladpura to Todi Mod, featuring 36 stations, at an estimated cost of ₹13,037.66 crore.

Expanding Jaipur’s Metro Network

The new corridor will be implemented by Rajasthan Metro Rail Corporation Limited (RMRCL), a 50:50 joint venture between Centre and Rajasthan government.

Jaipur’s existing metro system under Phase-1 operates along the East–West corridor from Mansarovar to Badi Chaupar, covering 11.64 km with 11 stations. The Phase-2 expansion will complement this network by adding a North–South axis, creating a more comprehensive, citywide transit system.

Connectivity to Key Economic Hubs

The Phase-2 corridor is designed to connect major activity centres across the city, including Sitapura Industrial Area, VKIA, Jaipur Airport, Tonk Road, SMS Hospital and Stadium, Ambabari, and Vidhyadhar Nagar.

It will also include underground stations in the airport area and integrate seamlessly with Phase-1 through interchanges and feeder systems, ensuring a unified and continuous metro network.

Boost to Public Transport Usage

Currently, Jaipur Metro Phase-1 records an average daily ridership of around 60,000 passengers. With the addition of Phase-2, ridership is expected to increase significantly, enhancing the share of public transport and reducing dependence on private vehicles.

Financial Viability and Implementation Plan

The project has undergone extensive appraisal, including Inter-Ministerial consultations, review by the Network Planning Group, and evaluation by the Public Investment Board. It has demonstrated strong socio-economic viability, with an Economic Internal Rate of Return (EIRR) exceeding the benchmark threshold of 14%.

Funding will be structured through equity contributions from both central and state governments, subordinate debt, and multilateral financing, in line with the Metro Rail Policy, 2017.

Sustainability and Urban Development Goals

Aligned with Rajasthan’s Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) Policy-2025 and national sustainable transport objectives, the project is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion and vehicular emissions.

Once completed, the expanded metro network will improve mobility for residents, workers, and tourists, strengthening Jaipur’s position as a modern and future-ready city.

Completion Timeline

The Jaipur Metro Phase-2 project is targeted for completion by September 2031 and is expected to play a key role in advancing broader goals of urban transformation under the vision of a “Viksit Bharat.”
