Amazon appointed Sameer Kumar as India’s ‘Country Manager’

New Delhi| E-Commerce giant Amazon on Wednesday announced the appointment of Sameer Kumar as India’s ‘Country Manager’ after Manish Tewari suddenly left the company. According to the update released by the company, Sameer Kumar has been working at Amazon since 1999. He will assume operational responsibilities in India from 1 October.

According to the company, “Samir Kumar, who has 25 years of experience working with Amazon, will now oversee the company’s India consumer business”. Manish, current country manager of Amazon India, has decided to explore opportunities outside the company.

Manish Tewari had led Amazon’s operations in India since July 2020. He had tendered his resignation on 6 August. The reason given for Manish Tewari’s resignation is that there were many differences between him and the company’s senior vice president Amit Aggarwal. “Tiwari was instrumental in making Amazon.in the real starting point for Indians to buy and sell anything online”, Amit Agarwal said in an internal email. This new role will be an additional responsibility for Sameer Kumar, who is already leading Amazon’s consumer businesses in the Middle East, South Africa and Turkey.

Amit Aggarwal said that India remains an important priority for Amazon. “We have a strong local leadership bench and with Sameer’s experiences in emerging markets, I am even more optimistic about our future plans for customers and business in India”, he said. Joining Amazon in the year 1999, Kumar was also part of the team that planned and launched Amazon.in in 2013. The company said that with the new changes, Amazon India will follow a dual leadership structure.
