New Delhi: SWITCH Mobility Ltd., a subsidiary of Ashok Leyland and part of the Hinduja Group, has unveiled the SWITCH EiV12, a low-floor electric city bus tailored specifically for the Indian market. This move aligns with the company’s commitment to sustainable urban mobility and positions SWITCH as a significant player in the global electric vehicle (EV) market.

India’s First Low-Floor Electric City Bus

The EiV12 stands out as India’s first low-floor city bus equipped with chassis-mounted batteries, boasting a scalable capacity exceeding 400 kWh. This innovation ensures enhanced energy efficiency and accessibility, catering to the growing demand for eco-friendly public transportation.

Mahesh Babu, CEO of SWITCH Mobility, noted the robust demand for the EiV12, with over 1,800 confirmed orders. Cities like Chennai, Bengaluru, and Delhi have already placed significant orders, highlighting the increasing adoption of electric buses in urban centers.

European Market Debut

Simultaneously, SWITCH has entered the European market with the launch of the SWITCH E1 electric bus in Spain. Both the EiV12 and E1 share a common EV architecture and design philosophy, underscoring the company’s global strategy.

Dheeraj Hinduja, Chairman of SWITCH Mobility, emphasized that the launch of these electric buses is a “proud milestone” for the Hinduja Group, reinforcing its dedication to sustainable mobility solutions. The company is actively developing additional products to expand its global portfolio.

Investment and Market Outlook

SWITCH has invested ₹100 crore in the development of the EiV12 and plans to allocate an additional $10–15 million to enhance the European E1 platform.

By 2030, the Indian electric city bus market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 21%, with electric bus penetration projected to reach 70%. It is estimated that India will have a fleet of over 70,000 electric city buses by that time.

Implications for Sustainable Urban Transport

The launch of the EiV12 and E1 reflects SWITCH Mobility’s commitment to shaping the future of urban transportation. By combining innovative technology with sustainable practices, the company aims to support the transition to cleaner energy in India and abroad.

The EiV12’s debut marks a significant step in India’s journey toward sustainable urban transport. With increasing government focus on electric mobility and rising consumer demand, SWITCH Mobility is well-positioned to lead the EV revolution both domestically and internationally.
