New Delhi| A target has been set to further strengthen India-France relations by 2047, the centenary of India’s independence. With this in mind, bilateral talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron took place at the Rio G20 summit. This was the third meeting this year between the two leaders, following President Macron’s visit to India as chief guest for the Republic Day celebrations in January and his meeting during the G-7 summit in Italy in June.

Prime Minister Modi said that during the meeting we discussed how India and France will continue to work together in space, energy, AI and other such future areas. Our countries will also work together to increase people-to-people contacts.

In the last few years, both the leaders have strengthened their friendship and relations between the two countries. Macron has described India as a giant in world history playing a decisive role in the future under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi.

On Monday night, the two leaders held a meeting in Rio de Janeiro Indian time. During this, the progress made in strategic, cultural, scientific, educational and economic cooperation including various industries between the two countries was taken stock of.

Macron posted a video hugging Prime Minister Modi. The Ministry of External Affairs later said in a statement that the two leaders appreciated the progress achieved in bilateral cooperation, including in strategic areas such as defence, space and civil nuclear energy, and aimed at strengthening their shared commitment to strategic autonomy. The Ministry of External Affairs elaborated that the two leaders appreciated the strengthening of trade, investment and technology ties, including in the areas of digital technology and artificial intelligence (AI). Apart from this, India-France partnership on digital public infrastructure was also appreciated. In this context, the Prime Minister welcomed President Macron’s initiative to organize the upcoming AI Action Summit in France. During this, the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the situation in the Middle East were also discussed prominently.

The two leaders also exchanged views on regional and international issues, including the Indo-Pacific, the External Affairs Ministry statement said. They reaffirmed their commitment to working together to rejuvenate and improve multilateralism and to help build a stable international order.
