New Delhi – Scorching sunlight, burning ground, and sweltering winds – summer in India can be unforgiving. But amid all this, Mulethi (licorice root) offers natural relief. According to Ayurvedic experts, consuming cooling foods is essential to maintain body temperature in hot weather. Mulethi stands out as one such remedy that not only cools the body but also calms the mind.

Used for centuries in Indian households and Ayurvedic medicine, mulethi is known to help with minor health issues and even serious conditions like cancer. A recent study by Hong Kong Baptist University revealed that mulethi may be effective in cancer treatment. The compound Isoliquiritigenin found in mulethi has shown potential in suppressing symptoms of diseases like pancreatic cancer.

A Respected Place in Ayurveda

Dr. Pramod Anand Tiwari, from Babe Ke Ayurvedic Medical College and Hospital in Punjab, emphasizes that people who are sensitive to heat or prone to sunstroke should consume mulethi. It helps the body stay cool and prevents heat-related issues. Not just the powder, but mulethi decoction (kadha) is also beneficial and provides relief from a range of ailments.

He explains,

“Mulethi kadha soothes not only the body and mind but also helps reduce stomach heat. Thanks to its naturally cooling properties, it eases digestive problems. Regular consumption can relieve issues like acidity, indigestion, bloating, and constipation.”

Heart Health Benefits

Mulethi is also known for supporting cardiovascular health. It improves blood circulation, which reduces the risk of heart blockages. The antioxidants and proteins in mulethi strengthen the heart muscles and help lower inflammation, thus reducing the chances of a heart attack. It also aids in maintaining healthy cholesterol levels.

Dr. Tiwari advises that heart patients can take 3 to 5 grams of mulethi powder mixed with 15 to 20 grams of rock sugar (mishri) in water daily. This can enhance heart health and minimize the risk of blockages. Its anti-inflammatory properties also help reduce cardiac stress and swelling, making it a valuable preventive measure for heart diseases.

Other Health Uses

Beyond heart and digestive benefits, mulethi is effective in treating mouth ulcers, hoarseness of voice, sore throat, and chronic cough. Even long-standing cough issues may be resolved with its juice.

Caution: Not for Everyone

However, Dr. Tiwari warns that mulethi should not be consumed without medical consultation, especially by pregnant women. Proper dosage and guidance are essential to ensure safety and effectiveness.
