India aims to become a three trillion dollar tourism economy by 2047

New Delhi| The central government has set a target of becoming a three trillion dollar tourism economy by 2047. India is rapidly emerging as the world’s favorite tourist destination. In the year 2022, a total of 1.43 crore international tourists including 64.4 lakh foreigners and 78.9 lakh NRIs visited India and the revenue of this sector was $17.6 billion.

The country received 92.4 lakh foreign tourist arrivals in 2023, indicating a positive recovery after the pandemic. That’s a 43.5 percent increase from a year ago. This year, foreign tourist arrivals (FTAs) stood at around 47.8 lakh from January to June. In the month of June, foreign tourist arrivals stood at 7,06,045, compared to 6,48,008 in June 2023. There has thus been an increase of nine per cent on a year-on-year basis.

According to the Government, despite facing some challenges, the sector continues to flourish, bolstered by various strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing infrastructure, promoting sustainable practices and enriching the overall visitor experience.

With a commitment to remove barriers and take advantage of opportunities, India is on its way to becoming a leading global tourist destination. According to the Tourism Ministry, under the ‘Chalo India’ campaign, the first one lakh foreigners to come to India will get free visas and the government will waive visa fees.

The Ministry has also launched the Incredible India Content Hub on the newly created Incredible India Digital Portal, aimed at various stakeholders including tour operators, journalists, students, researchers, filmmakers, writers, influencers, content creators, government officials and ambassadors. Is for use.

To involve citizens in tourism development and growth, the government is also introducing mechanisms at airports and railway stations across the country, so that tourists visiting can give their feedback on their visits to tourist attractions and destinations in the country.

To support the efforts of States/UTs in granting and implementing ‘Industry Status’ to tourism and guest sector, the Ministry has also launched a booklet which aims to act as a guide for States and Union Territories.
