Government’s estimate: Onion production to increase by 19%, tomato potato production will also increase
New Delhi| The production of onion, tomato and potato, which play a big role in vegetable inflation, is expected to increase in the current crop year. Onion production could rise 19 per cent to 288.77 lakh tones in the current crop year ending June 25, the agriculture ministry said in its first estimate released for 2024-25. In the same period a year ago, 242.67 lakh tones of onions were produced.
According to the ministry, tomato production could be around 215.49 lakh tones, which is 1.06 per cent more than 213.23 lakh tones a year ago. The current crop year is expected to yield 595.72 lakh tones of potatoes, 25.19 lakh tones more than a year ago. The total yield of vegetables could increase to 2,145.63 lakh tones from 2,072.088 lakh tones a year ago.
Fruit production will increase by 2.48 lakh tones
According to estimates, the total production of fruits could increase by 2.48 lakh tones to reach 1,132.26 lakh tones. This increase is possible due to increase in production of mangoes, grapes and bananas. The production of horticultural crops is expected to increase from 176.66 lakh tones to 179.37 lakh tones.
