From Cancer Moonshot to Observer Mission, Highlights of the Quad Summit
New Delhi| PM Modi put India’s views before top leaders of other countries during Quad summit meeting in America. Modi held three separate bilateral meetings with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and US President Joe Biden in addition to the Quad Leadership Summit in Wilmington, Delaware on Saturday. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said at a special briefing in New York on Sunday (September 22) that all these meetings gave the prime minister a chance to put forward India’s ideas and commitments to global growth, development, peace and security.
Quad Cancer Moonshot
One of the summit’s key announcements was Quad Cancer Moonshot, an unprecedented partnership to tackle the challenges posed by cancer and cervical cancer in particular. Quad cancer moonshot is projected to save millions of lives in coming decades, statement says. The group has launched a program to expand screening for cervical cancer, increase vaccination against human papillomavirus or HPV, a common sexually transmitted infection and the primary cause of cervical cancer, and treat patients.
The initiative, announced by US President Joe Biden, will be launched with a focus on cases of cervical cancer, which, according to a White House statement, is a largely preventable disease that poses a major health threat in the Indo-Pacific region. The crisis persists, plus it will lay the groundwork for other forms of cancer. PM Modi dedicated “US$7.5 million grant for cancer testing, screening and diagnosis in the Indo-Pacific region” as India’s contribution to the initiative, according to a release from the Ministry of External Affairs.
Quad-at-Sea Ship Observer mission
Partners also first launch Quad at Sea Ship Observer mission. It’ll be in 2025 to improve inter-operability and advance maritime security among relevant coastguards in the Indo-Pacific. It listed the initiative, saying the U.S. Coast Guard, Japan Coast Guard, Australian Border Force and Indian Coast Guard planned to launch “quad-at-c” ship observer missions for the first time in 2025. Statement said it’s to advance maritime safety.
Indo-Pacific Logistics Network
Quad Indo-Pacific Logistics Network project will advance shared airlift capability among nations and leverage their collective logistics strengths to support civilian response to natural disasters more efficiently and more rapidly.
Semiconductors
He said a cooperation memorandum has been announced, which will leverage the complementary strengths of Quad partners to realize a diverse and competitive market and increase Quad flexibility in semiconductor supply chains.
UN Security Council discussed a number of regional and global issues, including the need to reform the multilateral governance system, including the UN Security Council. During PM’s meeting with Biden, both sides exchanged agreements on depositing instruments of ratification for Pillar 3 and Pillar 4 of IPEF and its broader agreement on the occasion of this meeting.
Quad Scholarship
India announced a new initiative to provide fifty quad scholarships worth $5,00,000 to students from the Indo-Pacific to study a 4-year undergraduate engineering program at a technical institute funded by the Indian government. Modi also said coming together of these four Quad partners with shared democratic values is important for humanity at a time when the world is plagued by tension and conflict. He said the Quad is here to stay, assist, partner and complement the efforts of Indo-Pacific countries. Leaders took stock of progress achieved by Quad last year and set an ambitious agenda for next year. India will host Quad summit in 2025, he said.
