Beware! Bank Accounts Being Emptied in the Name of RBI and SBI – Here’s How to Protect Yours

Cybercriminals are constantly coming up with new ways to scam people. Their latest tricks involve fake RBI voice calls and fraudulent messages about SBI reward points. Fraudsters are now impersonating the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) through bogus voice calls, falsely warning users that their bank account has been blocked due to suspicious credit card activity. The call prompts users to press a key to avoid account suspension — luring them into a phishing trap.

Similarly, scammers are tricking people into downloading a fake app under the guise of “SBI Rewards”. The PIB Fact Check team has now issued a warning to alert the public. Here’s how the fraud works and how you can stay safe.

What is the RBI Voice Call Scam?

Scammers use voicemails pretending to be from the RBI, falsely claiming that due to suspicious activity on your credit card, your bank account has been blocked. They urge the listener to press a number for more information. The PIB Fact Check has warned people to be cautious of such fraudulent calls that threaten account suspension in the name of RBI.

What is the SBI Rewards Scam?

In another case, the Press Information Bureau (PIB) has flagged a viral message asking users to download an app called “SBI Rewards”. This message is part of a scam designed to trick users into giving away personal information or installing malware.

SBI Clarifies: We Don’t Send APKs

The State Bank of India (SBI) has confirmed that it does not send reward redemption links or APK files via SMS or WhatsApp. Hackers exploit technical loopholes and use social engineering to gain access to users’ devices and commit fraud. Therefore, it’s essential to stay alert before clicking any links or downloading unknown apps.

How to Stay Safe from These Frauds?

  • Never share OTP, card number, or UPI PIN with anyone — even if they claim to be from RBI or a bank.
  • Banks do not ask for reward point details via phone or SMS.
  • Avoid clicking on suspicious links.
  • Always verify the website URL before entering sensitive information.
  • If you suspect any fraud, immediately contact your bank’s helpline and report the incident to the cybercrime portal.
