New Delhi| A home-made vegetarian thali became costlier by six per cent year-on-year to Rs 31.60 in December, 2024, driven by a surge in tomato and potato prices. In December, 2023, it was worth Rs 29.70. However, it has become cheaper compared to November’s 32.70 rupees. According to the report released on Monday by rating agency CRISIL, last month the price of non-vegetarian thali has also increased by 12 percent on an annual basis to reach Rs 63.30. Prices have also increased by three percent on monthly basis.

The 16 per cent year-on-year increase in vegetable oil prices due to higher demand during the festive and wedding seasons, as well as increased import duties, has also been reflected in plate prices. However, the 11 per cent fall in the price of LPG fuel has partly offset.

Tomatoes and potatoes account for 24 per cent of the total cost of a vegetarian platter, the report said. Tomato price rose 24 per cent to Rs 47 per kg in December, 2024 compared to Rs 38 in December, 2023. Potato prices also rose 50 per cent to Rs 36 per kg, up from Rs 24 per kg in December 2023. The price of chicken, which contributes 50 per cent to the cost of non-vegetarian thali, also rose in December.

Tomato prices have fallen by 12 per cent compared to November amid fresh supplies from Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat. The 12 per cent fall in onion prices and 2 per cent fall in potato prices between November and December have also reduced the prices of vegetarian thali on a monthly basis. Prices of onion, tomato and potato were high between July-October.
