‘Supply of more onions to retail markets’, central government takes steps to reduce prices

New Delhi| Amid the huge rise in onion prices, the government has said that it will sell more onions from the buffer stock in the retail markets to stabilize the rates. According to government figures, the retail price of onion in Delhi is Rs 67 per kg. The average retail price in the country is Rs 58 per kg.
According to officials, there has been a temporary disruption in the supply of onion in some markets in the last two-three days due to the festive season and closure of mandis. To overcome this, the government has decided to increase the supply. NAFED has this week sent two rakes to Delhi-NCR and one more to Guwahati.
According to the official, more onion will be supplied from NCCF through both rail and road transport. The government has also decided to unload onions kept in cold storage in Sonipat to meet the needs of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Himachal, Jammu and Kashmir, Delhi and others. Bureau
The government procured 4.7 lakh tonnes of Rabi onions this year to keep the price stable. It went on sale on September 5 through retail sales at Rs 35 per kg as well as wholesaling in major mandis across the country. So far, more than 1.50 lakh tonnes of onion in the buffer has been shipped from Nashik and other centers via road transport to consumer centers via trucks.
The government said, retail prices of tomatoes are falling with the fall in prices in the mandis. The weekly average price in Azadpur Mandi is 27 per cent lower at Rs 4,000 per quintal and in Pimpalgaon (Maharashtra) the average price is 35 per cent lower at Rs 2,250 per quintal.
