TRAI: Number of Internet consumers rises to 96.96 crore, telecom companies earn 8% more than every customer

New Delhi| The number of internet subscribers in the country increased by 1.59 per cent on a quarterly basis to reach 96.96 crore in the April-June period of the current financial year. The country had 95.44 crore Internet subscribers in the January-March quarter. Out of total 96.96 crore subscribers, 4.20 crore people use internet through wire, while the number of wireless internet subscribers has reached 92.75 crore.

The ‘India Telecom Services Performance Indicator’ report from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) states that the earnings of telecom companies from every customer for mobile services has increased by 8.11 per cent year-on-year to Rs 157.45 during the April-June quarter On a monthly basis, the average monthly revenue per user (ARPU) of these companies has increased by 2.55 per cent compared to Rs 153.54 in the January-March quarter.

According to the report, the adjusted gross revenue (AGR) of the telecom services sector has increased to Rs 70,555 crore in the April-June quarter. It has registered an increase of 0.13 per cent on a quarterly basis and 7.51 per cent on an annual basis. According to the report, the number of people using internet through broadband increased by 1.81 percent to reach 94.07 crore in the April-June quarter. In the January-March quarter, their number was 92.40 crore. However, the number of narrowband internet subscribers dropped from 3.03 crore to 2.88 crore.

The number of telephone subscribers in the country increased to 120.56 crore in the April-June quarter. It has registered an increase of 0.53 per cent compared to January-March and 2.70 per cent on an annual basis.
The number of telephone subscribers in urban areas increased from 66.53 crore to 66.71 crore. In rural areas, the number is also 53.85 crore, which is higher on a quarterly basis.

The number of wireless subscribers in the country has increased by a net 50.4 lakh to reach 117.05 crore in April-June. The number has grown by 0.43 per cent on a monthly basis and by 2.36 per cent on an annual basis. During this period, the number of wireline customers increased by 3.90 percent on monthly basis and 15.81 percent on annual basis to reach 3.51 crore.

According to the report, the total telecommunication density in the country increased from 85.69 per cent to 85.95 per cent on a quarterly basis. In rural areas, it increased from 59.19 per cent to 59.65 per cent, while urban telecommunication density decreased from 133.72 per cent to 133.46 per cent. Wireless telecommunications density has increased from 83.27 per cent to 83.45 per cent.

Every 100 telecommunications subscribers faced seven or fewer problems per month. 75 per cent and more of the telecommunications complaints in rural and mountainous areas were resolved the very next day. At the same time, 100 per cent of the problems were settled within seven days. In rural and hilly areas, telecommunication subscribers have more than 95 percent access to call centers/customer care.
Within 90 seconds the telecommunications operator responded to more than 95 per cent of calls (voice to voice).
