The Chairman of the Rajya Sabha on Saturday delivered his valedictory remarks, formally bringing the 270th Session—and the Budget Session of Parliament—to a close, while commending members for their active participation and constructive debates.

Highlighting the significance of the Budget Session, the Chairman described it as the most consequential among Parliament’s three sessions, noting that the decisions taken during this period directly influence the country’s economic direction and citizens’ lives.

The session began with a four-day discussion on the Motion of Thanks to the President’s Address, which saw participation from 79 members. The reply by Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed key concerns raised across party lines.

The discussion on the Union Budget 2026–27 was equally extensive, spanning four days with 97 members contributing. The House also reviewed the functioning of two key ministries and took note of statements on the India–US Bilateral Trade Agreement and the evolving situation in West Asia. The Prime Minister’s statement on the regional conflict and its implications for India’s energy security was described as providing clarity and direction.

During the session, 50 Private Members’ Bills were introduced, while members spoke in 12 regional languages on 94 occasions, reflecting the House’s linguistic diversity. The Chairman noted that the House functioned for a total of 157 hours and 40 minutes, achieving a productivity rate of 109.87 per cent. In addition, 117 questions were raised, alongside 446 Zero Hour submissions and 207 Special Mentions.

The session also witnessed the re-election of Harivansh Narayan Singh as Deputy Chairman for a third term, an occasion acknowledged by leaders across the political spectrum.

Expressing gratitude, the Chairman thanked the Deputy Chairman, members of the Panel of Vice-Chairpersons, leaders of various parties, and all members for their cooperation in conducting the proceedings. He also appreciated the efforts of the Secretariat staff and the role of the media in keeping the public informed.

The session concluded with the playing of the National Song “Vande Mataram,” following which the House was adjourned sine die.
