World Economic Forum: Klaus Schwab resigns from the post of President and Board of Trustees of the World Economic Forum

New Delhi| The World Economic Forum said that its founder Klaus Schwab has stepped down as chairman and member of the board of trustees with immediate effect. Schwab is considered synonymous with the Geneva-based organization. It was founded 55 years ago and they have been its head ever since. “Following my recent announcement, and entering my 88th year, I have decided to step down as Chairman and as a member of the Board of Trustees with immediate effect”, Schwab told the board At an extraordinary board meeting on Sunday, the board discussed Schwab’s resignation and unanimously appointed vice president Peter Brebek-Letmath as interim president.
The World Economic Forum said in a statement that an exploratory committee has also been formed to select the future president. The WEF, which describes itself as an international organization formed for public-private cooperation, holds its major annual meeting in Davos every year. Top government and business leaders from all over the world including India participate in it. Apart from public and private sector stalwarts, the largest gathering of people from education, culture and civil society takes place during the meeting in Davos. WEF has acknowledged the outstanding achievements of the retired Chairman and Founder.
“He created the leading global platform for dialogue and progress, and the Board expressed its gratitude for his 55 years of tireless leadership at the top of the platform”, it said The board of trustees includes Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani, World Bank President Ajay Banga, IMF chief Christina Georgieva, European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde, WTO chief Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and Singapore President Tharman Shammugaratnam. The World Economic Forum noted that at a time when the world is undergoing rapid change, the need for inclusive dialogue to deal with complexity and shape the future has never been more important.
