Das, 67, longest serving RBI governor in 67 years, to complete term on December 10
New Delhi| RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das holds the record for longest tenure as Governor in 67 years. Das, 67, ends his term on Dec. 10. It is believed that this time they will not get extension in service. In such a situation, the government can start searching for a new governor after the assembly elections are over.
Shaktikanta Das was made the Reserve Bank of India i.e. RBI Governor in 2018. After doing better work in Corona, he got a service extension of three years. If he gets a service extension of more than 18 months again, he could set a record for being the longest-serving governor in the history of the central bank. Previously Benegal Rama Rao had been governor for more than seven years between July 1949 to January 1957.
The Monetary Policy Committee of RBI, i.e. MPC, will meet between 4-6 December. Das recently said on Union Minister Piyush Goyal’s rate cut that he will respond to it in December. In such a situation, it is believed that slaves can cut rates once while leaving. However, the decision will have to be taken by the MPC.
There is speculation among economists that slaves favor service expansion due to their handling of the economy during shocks such as the pandemic. Upasana Bhardwaj, chief economist at Kotak Mahindra Bank, said Das has done an incredible job. There is a high possibility that his tenure will be extended. The country’s foreign exchange reserves stood at a record level of $700 billion during Das’s tenure, ranking fourth in the world.
