Sonbhadra, Chandauli and Mirzapur to become hubs of pumped storage plants in UP

Lucknow| Amidst the increasing industrial activities and record energy consumption needs in Uttar Pradesh, special focus is being given to the clean energy sector. In this sequence, along with promoting solar energy, now the Yogi government of UP is also making continuous efforts towards promoting hydro based pump projects. Mirzapur, Chandauli and Sonbhadra in the state are ready to play a role in this direction as the state becomes the hub of pumped storage plants. Mirzapur is going to become the biggest hub of these pump plants in the state, where 4 plants of different capacity will be established. At the same time, the pumped storage plant set up in Sonbhadra will be the largest energy generator. Pumped storage plant will also be established in Chandauli.
The department official said that through all these 6 plants, the state government is moving forward with the target of producing a total of 4,730 MW of energy. The special thing is that all these plants have been given clearance in the middle of August and now the process of completing their establishment, construction and development works rapidly is going to start soon. Apart from these 6 plants, Acme, Awada and East India Petroleum also have ‘in principal approval’ regarding other pumped storage plants in Sonbhadra, Chandauli and Mirzapur and instructions have been given by the Yogi government to proceed with the works on all these projects expeditiously.
The department official said that under the project, first approval was received to set up a 1,250 MW capacity hydro pumped storage plant at Garhawa in Sonbhadra on May 30 this year. It is being developed by Aquagreen Engineering Management Private Limited. Here the storage capacity will be increased by pumping water of Son river in two reserves, after which pump intake well will be established 4.6 kilometers away from the reserve. All construction and development works will be completed under the project with an amount of Rs 6,100.62 crore.
At the same time, on August 8 this year, approval was given for the construction of a 600 MW capacity hydro pumped storage plant at Mubarakpur in Chandauli. It is being constructed by Acme Urja Two Private Limited and will be a closed loop storage hydro project. Here too, energy will be produced from Upper Reservoir and Lower Reservoir mechanisms and various types of construction and development works under the project will be completed at a cost of Rs 3,544.81 crore.
Yogi government is moving towards generating 3,480 MW of energy through the project of Pumped Storage Plants in Mirzapur. Under the project, a total of four pumped storage projects have been given the green signal to be established between 26 June and 29 August. Among these, the construction and development work of a pumped storage plant capable of producing 630 MW of energy at Katra at a cost of Rs 4,410 crore will be done by Awada Group. Whereas, plants with 600 MW capacity will be constructed, developed and operated by Renyu at a cost of Rs 3,350 crore in village Kalu Patti and 800 MW capacity at Babura at a cost of Rs 4,100 crore.
