Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday extended greetings on National Science Day, stating that the occasion celebrates the spirit of research, innovation and scientific curiosity that drives the nation forward.

In a post on X, the Prime Minister said the day commemorates the discovery of the Raman Effect by physicist C.V. Raman, a breakthrough that placed Indian scientific research on the global map.

“Today, on National Science Day, we celebrate the spirit of research, innovation and scientific curiosity that drives our nation forward. This day commemorates the groundbreaking discovery of the Raman Effect by Sir C.V. Raman. This discovery placed Indian research firmly on the global map,” he wrote.

The Prime Minister added that the country reaffirms its resolve to empower youth, strengthen research ecosystems and harness science and technology for national development and global good.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also conveyed his greetings, praising scientists and innovators for expanding the frontiers of knowledge. He said advancements in areas such as artificial intelligence, space, defence, information technology, healthcare, agriculture and renewable energy are inspiring young people, strengthening the economy and enhancing national security.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah extended his wishes to scientists and researchers across the country. In his message on social media, he commended their dedication to innovation and nation-building, expressing hope that the day would renew the nation’s commitment to scientific progress.

India observes National Science Day every year on February 28 to mark Raman’s 1928 discovery of the Raman Effect, a phenomenon related to the scattering of light. The discovery later earned him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930, making him the first Asian to receive a Nobel Prize in the sciences.

Over the years, the day has evolved into a nationwide initiative aimed at promoting scientific temper, encouraging research and inspiring young minds to pursue careers in science and technology.

This year’s national-level celebrations are being held at Vigyan Bhawan under the aegis of the Department of Science and Technology, Ministry of Science and Technology. The programme began with special lectures chaired by Principal Scientific Adviser Ajay Kumar Sood.
