New Delhi| Sales of commercial vehicles of Tata Motors Limited decreased by 19 percent in the second quarter of FY 2024-25. At the same time, sales of passenger vehicles have declined by 6 per cent on an annual basis. The company has reported total sales of 2,15,034 vehicles, down 12 percent compared to 2,43,024 units sold during the same period last year. The decline in sales has been attributed to poor performance in both the commercial vehicle and passenger vehicle segments.
Talking about the domestic market, Tata Motors sold 69,694 vehicles in September 2024. This figure is 15 percent lower than in September 2023. The total number of vehicles sold domestically by Tata Motors in the second quarter of the financial year 2024-25 stood at 2,09,861. This is 11 percent less than the 2,37,128 carriages sold in the second quarter of the previous fiscal year.
The second quarter of the financial year was the most challenging for the company for the commercial vehicles category. In the said quarter of last year, the sales figure for commercial vehicles was 1,04,085, which this time dropped to 84,281.
Sales of commercial vehicles domestically fell 23 percent to 28,631 units compared to September 2023. This figure shows the challenging situation for the company in the market. The company has suffered a major setback in the heavy commercial vehicle category. In the second quarter of this financial year, the company sold 22,904 vehicles in the said category which is 25% less than the previous year. It is believed that this decline was recorded due to slowdown in infrastructure projects, decline in mining activities and heavy monsoon.
Similarly, sales of intermediate and light commercial vehicles (ILMCV) also decreased by 11 per cent. During the second quarter, 14,693 vehicles of this category were sold. The small commercial vehicles (SCV) and pickup segments also recorded a 25 percent decline in the company’s sales. A total of 31,399 units were sold during the second quarter of the current financial year in this category. In contrast, the commercial vehicle business of the company’s passenger segment showed flexibility during the second quarter. Total sales in this segment increased by 3 per cent to 10,935 units as demand picked up.
Girish Wagh, executive director, Tata Motors Limited, said, “The slowdown in execution of infrastructure projects, reduced mining activity and heavy rains led to a slackening of demand resulting in the HCV segment registering a 25 per cent decline in Q2 FY25”. At the same time, the ILMCV (Intermediate and Light Commercial Vehicles) segment recorded a decline of 11 percent
