RBI gives big update by taking out of circulation Rs 2000 notes

New Delhi| The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has given an important update regarding the notes to the Rs 2000 which has been removed from circulation. RBI said that 98.15 per cent of the Rs 2000 notes that had been removed from circulation have returned to the banking system. But people still have notes worth Rs 6,577 crore. On 19 May 2023, RBI had announced the withdrawal of Rs 2000 notes from circulation.
The statement issued by RBI said that Rs 2000 notes worth a total of Rs 3.56 lakh crore were present at the close of business on the day of the note withdrawal announcement. 31 January 2025 This has decreased to Rs 6,577 crore. Thus far, a total of 98.15 per cent has returned.

The Reserve Bank had made the facility to deposit or exchange Rs 2000 notes available in all bank branches by October 7, 2023. This facility is still available in 19 issue offices of the Reserve Bank. Issuance offices of RBI are accepting Rs 2000 notes. Apart from this, people can send 2000 rupee notes to any issuing office of RBI for deposit in their bank accounts through any post office in the country.
Despite being withdrawn from circulation, Rs 2000 notes remain legal tender. The 2000 rupee notes were brought into circulation in November 2016 with the then prevailing 1000 rupee and 500 rupee notes being removed from circulation.
