RBI Deputy Governor Dr. Poonam Gupta: Worked in World Bank-IMF, was also the first woman head of NCAAER

New Delhi| Shalimar Bagh of Delhi was in the headlines recently because of its current MLA and Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, but Dr. Poonam Gupta has once again brought it into discussion. Dr., the first woman director general of the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), India’s oldest and largest independent, non-profit and economic policy research think tank. Poonam Gupta has recently been appointed Deputy Governor (DG) of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) by the Central Government. Arriving at this important position in the central bank’s 90-year history, Dr. Poonam Gupta will be the fourth woman DG.
Dr., who has made significant contributions to studies, research, teaching and policy making in the economic sector for more than three decades. Poonam Gupta is an expert in economic matters of the country and the world, especially in relation to India and China. He has done an in-depth study on monetary policy and inflation control. Where Dr. Poonam Gupta has studied and taught from Delhi University to Maryland University of America, while she has also worked in globally renowned institutions like IMF and World Bank. She has also contributed to the Economic Advisory Council (EAC), Finance Commission and NITI Aayog of the Prime Minister of India.
Beginner
Dr. Poonam Gupta was born in 1968. Poonam, who was talented since childhood, also received a scholarship from the Government of India for secondary education. He earned a BA Honors degree in Economics in 1989 from Hindu College, Delhi University (DU). She also received the gold medal for the best female representative in DU. Poonam moved to America after earning her MA in 1991 from the Delhi School of Economics here. In 1995, he again took a master’s degree in economics from the University of Maryland, USA, and from here also did a PhD in economics in 1998. He also won the 1998 Exim Bank Prize for his PhD on International Economics.
Career: Worked twice in the World Bank
Dr. Poonam Gupta started her career as an assistant professor at Hansraj and Hindu College, Delhi from 1991 to 1993. She joined the World Bank as an intern from 1994 to 1996. After earning his PhD degree, he worked at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) from 1998 to 2006. He also has experience teaching as an associate professor at Delhi School of Economics (DU) from 2006 to 2008. From 2009 to 2011, Dr. Poonam worked as Professor of Macroeconomics at the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations. She then became part of the World Bank again in the year 2013 as a senior economist. In 2017, she also became the Lead Economist of India. He worked in this institute for about eight years till 2021. During this time, between 2020 and 2021, he served as Lead Economist in the Global Macro and Market Research of the International Finance Corporation (IFC). In the year 2021, Dr. Poonam Gupta became the first woman Director General of the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER) and till now held this post.
Second innings in RBI
New Deputy Governor (DG) becomes Dr. This will be Poonam Gupta’s second innings in RBI. Earlier, she had also served as Chair Professor of RBI in National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP) between 2011-2013. After about fourteen years, again a woman has been given the responsibility of the post of Deputy Governor of RBI. Before her, KG Udeshi (2003-2005), Shyamala Gopinath (2004-2009) and Usha Thorat (2005-2010) have been DGs of RBI.
Also wrote a book
Dr. Poonam Gupta has also written a book titled ‘Emerging Giant: China and India in the World Economy’. Also has published India Policy Forum Volumes 18, 19, 20 and 21. His views on the economy have been published through articles in major magazines and newspapers of the country and the world like Economist, Financial Times, Wall Street Journal, Economic Times, Financial Express etc.
Husband and wife studied from the same institutions
Dr. Poonam Gupta’s marriage was attended by renowned economist Dr. Sudhir Mishra, who is currently the Director and Chief Executive of the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER). The special thing is that both of them have done graduation and post graduation in Economics from Delhi University, while they have also studied at Maryland University of America.
