Railways subsidizes tickets every year by ₹56993 crore, said Ashwini Vaishnav in Lok Sabha

New Delhi| A total subsidy of Rs 56,993 crore is given every year by Indian Railways to all categories of passengers, including 46 per cent discount on each ticket. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav gave this information in the Lok Sabha.

Responding to various questions asked in the Lok Sabha regarding restoring the discount given to different categories of railway passengers, Vaishnav said that if the ticket price is Rs 100 then the Railways charges only Rs 54 for it – that is, 46 percent discount is given to the passenger.

“A total subsidy of Rs 56,993 crore is given every year by Indian Railways to all categories of passengers”, Vaishnav said during Question Hour Answering another question on rapid train service, he said that Railways has already started such service – Namo Bharat Rapid Rail – between Bhuj and Ahmedabad and due to its excellent service the level of passenger satisfaction is very high.

According to officials Namo Bharat Rapid Rail has improved connectivity between the two cities by covering the 359-kilometre stretch between Bhuj and Ahmedabad in 5 hours 45 minutes, stopping at several stations along the way.
