PM Modi holds bilateral talks with Mark Carney, reviews India-Canada strategic partnership
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday held delegation-level talks with his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney at Hyderabad House.
The meeting marked Carney’s first official visit to India since assuming office. He arrived in Mumbai on February 27.
The discussions build on earlier interactions between the two Prime Ministers on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Kananaskis in June 2025 and the G20 Summit in Johannesburg in November 2025. At the G20 meeting, PM Modi had highlighted India’s target of achieving USD 50 billion in bilateral trade with Canada by 2030.
Both leaders have previously agreed to pursue a constructive and balanced partnership grounded in mutual respect, strong people-to-people connections, and growing economic complementarities.
Earlier in the day, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar called on Prime Minister Carney and expressed appreciation for his commitment to a forward-looking partnership. In a post on X, Jaishankar said, “Delighted to call on Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada in New Delhi this morning. Appreciate his commitment towards charting a forward – looking partnership.”
Carney, who was accompanied by his wife Diana Fox Carney, described India as the “world’s fastest-growing major economy” and expressed optimism about expanding collaboration. In a post on X after arriving in New Delhi, he said Canada and India were “two confident and ambitious nations” seeking to forge new partnerships in energy, talent, innovation and artificial intelligence to enhance security and prosperity.
During his visit to Mumbai, Carney held business engagements and interacted with Indian and Canadian CEOs, industry leaders, innovators and representatives of Canadian pension funds operating in India.
