The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has awarded a contract for the construction of a 15-kilometre-long four-lane South–East Bypass for Azamgarh, aimed at improving regional connectivity and easing traffic congestion in the city.
The project, valued at ₹368.85 crore, has been awarded to Kaluwala Construction Private Limited and will be executed under the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) mode.
According to the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, the bypass will begin near Rani-Ka-Sarai village and extend up to the Purvanchal Expressway, forming a crucial link in the region’s road network. Once completed, it will help create a continuous ring road around Azamgarh, facilitating smoother traffic flow and reducing congestion within the city.
The project includes several key infrastructure components such as one flyover, one railway overbridge (RoB), two interchanges, two vehicular underpasses (VUPs), eight light vehicular underpasses (LVUPs), and three minor bridges. Additionally, service roads spanning 11.6 km and 9 km on either side, along with a 7.5 km slip road, will be developed as part of the project.
The Ministry said the bypass is expected to significantly improve traffic movement in the region, lower logistics costs, and enhance overall connectivity. The project is also anticipated to contribute to long-term economic growth by enabling faster and safer transportation across eastern Uttar Pradesh.
