India’s tourism sector to provide employment to 39.5 million people

New Delhi| India’s tourism sector is set to generate around 39.5 million jobs by the end of the year. At the same time, it is likely to increase to 42.3 million employment opportunities by the year 2025. This information was given in a report. According to NLB Services, a provider of technology and digital talent solutions, these sectors will account for 31 per cent of direct employment, including positions such as tour guides, hotel staff and tour operators.
NLB Services CEO Sachin Alug said, “People who will get indirect employment under this”. That includes areas such as local artisans, logistics and transport operators, supply chain workers, IT support for online booking, data analysis and landscape maintenance. These posts will provide 69 per cent employment.”
The World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) has projected annual GDP growth of 7.1 percent for India’s travel and tourism sector over the next decade. This industry has a significant impact on the economy, contributing about $199.6 billion to GDP. In the Union Budget, the government allocated Rs 2,479 crore for tourism in FY 2025, which will further boost the sector.
“The multiplier effect of the tourism sector is very strong, as each direct employment in this sector is expected to create many indirect jobs”, Alug said. Emerging tourism trends highlight the growing interest in adventure and health tourism, as well as culinary tourism, as travelers seek to experience local flavors. Spiritual tourism remains a major attraction, attracting both domestic and international tourists to cities like Varanasi, Rishikesh and Bodh Gaya.
Additionally, India ranks 10th globally in the Medical Tourism Index (MTI) for 2020-2021 and is expected to grow in the coming years, which is projected to increase the number of nurses by 12 percent, doctors by 10 percent and other health workers by 15 percent
According to the report, another important trend is the growth of the backpacker hostel market, which caters to the needs of young travelers looking for budget-friendly and social options. Alug said the segment would create opportunities for hostel managers, event coordinators and digital marketing, contributing an additional 5 percent of total employment in the tourism sector.
