Indian Railways has recorded a year of comprehensive growth in FY 2025-26, achieving major milestones across freight operations, passenger services, infrastructure development and safety systems, while advancing self-reliance in manufacturing and technology.

Highlighting the performance, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Saturday said the national transporter witnessed record freight loading, expansion of modern train services and improved safety outcomes, contributing to enhanced connectivity and passenger experience across the country.

Rail operations remained robust, with around 25,000 trains running daily. Additional special trains were introduced during peak travel periods, helping manage high passenger demand and improving accessibility.

Freight movement reached a historic high of 1,670 million tonnes during the year, reflecting the Railways’ ability to efficiently transport key commodities such as coal, cement, fertilisers and food grains, thereby supporting critical supply chains.

On the manufacturing front, Indian Railways strengthened its ‘Make in India’ push by producing 1,674 locomotives and 6,677 LHB coaches. These modern coaches are designed to enhance safety and passenger comfort, marking continued progress in rolling stock modernisation.

Passenger services also saw notable advancements with the rollout of Vande Bharat Sleeper trains, complementing the existing fleet of semi-high-speed Vande Bharat and Amrit Bharat trains. These services aim to provide faster, more comfortable and technologically advanced travel options, particularly for long-distance routes.

Safety remained a key priority, with the indigenous Kavach Automatic Train Protection System now operational over more than 3,100 route kilometres. Work is underway to expand the system across an additional 24,400 kilometres, with the aim of preventing collisions and strengthening operational safety.

Digital initiatives gained momentum during the year, particularly with the launch of the RailOne App in July 2025. The platform offers integrated services such as ticket booking, train enquiries and grievance redressal. Efforts to ensure fair ticketing also led to the removal of over 3.04 crore suspicious user accounts.

Infrastructure development continued at a rapid pace, with 35 Gati Shakti Cargo Terminals commissioned to improve logistics efficiency. Additionally, 119 railway stations were redeveloped under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, enhancing passenger amenities and station infrastructure.

Connectivity improvements were also achieved in key regions. The Bairabi–Sairang rail line extended rail access to Aizawl, boosting connectivity in the Northeast, while major bridge projects strengthened all-weather rail links to Jammu and Kashmir.

The Ministry of Railways said the achievements underline Indian Railways’ continued focus on modernisation, capacity expansion, safety enhancement and digital transformation, positioning it as a critical driver of economic growth and national connectivity.
