Heavy rainfall lashed several parts of Mumbai on Monday, leading to waterlogging in many areas and causing severe traffic disruptions across the city.

Traffic on the Western Express Highway near Vile Parle slowed to a crawl, while waterlogging was reported in Sion’s Gandhi Market area. The downpour brought normal life to a halt in several pockets of the city.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported (between 8:30 am on Sunday and 5:30 am on Monday) moderate to heavy rainfall across several regions, including Coastal Andhra Pradesh (Visakhapatnam – 92 mm), Coastal Maharashtra (Ratnagiri – 109 mm, Santacruz – 71 mm), and Goa (Panjim – 69 mm). Rainfall was also recorded in Saurashtra & Kutch, Karnataka, Kerala, Telangana, Rayalaseema, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Manipur, and the Andaman Islands.

Earlier on Monday, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) gave a weather forecast for heavy rainfall in Mumbai around 2 am.

A flash flood alert had also been issued on Sunday for Maharashtra’s Konkan region, including Mumbai. IMD cautioned that flash floods were possible in Mumbai City, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Suburban Mumbai, and parts of Goa.

In its 24-hour Flash Flood Risk Outlook, valid until 11:30 am on August 17, IMD highlighted a moderate to high risk of flash floods in fully saturated soils and low-lying areas of Konkan and Goa due to intense rainfall.

The department also predicted heavy to very heavy rain in Mumbai city and suburbs, accompanied by gusty winds reaching 40–50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph.
