New Delhi| Raphael Varane has announced his retirement from football at the age of 31. The former Manchester United, Real Madrid and France international took to Instagram to confirm his decision, citing physical challenges, especially knee problems, as the main reason behind his retirement from the game. Varane, who joined Italian club Como on a free transfer last summer after leaving Manchester United, was expected to miss a large part of the 2024 season with a knee problem. In fact, Como did not even register him for their Serie A team, as it became clear that he would take a long time to recover.

Instead of continuing to struggle for fitness, Varane has decided to stay away from the sport, writing an emotional farewell letter to his supporters. Varane wrote in his Instagram post, “They say that all good things must come to an end”. In my career, I have faced many challenges, proved myself on many occasions, almost all of which were impossible. Incredible emotions, special moments and memories that will last a lifetime.”

Varane has had a prolific career, including winning the World Cup with France in 2018 and four Champions League titles with Real Madrid.

His achievements include four Champions League titles, three La Liga titles, a World Cup and several other domestic and international trophies. With 93 caps for France, he was an integral part of the team for over a decade and was known for his leadership and composure on and off the field.

The French player, who has already retired from international football in early 2023, hinted at staying involved in football in a different capacity. ” He said,  “And so, a new life begins off the field. I will stay with Como only. Just without using your shoes and shin pads.”

Manchester United wrote on X, “During your three seasons at Old Trafford you represented our colours in a very striking way”. We thank you for your humility, leadership and commitment. Hopefully these qualities will prove useful to you in your next endeavor also. Once Red, always Red.”
