Forecast for light showers in south TN, delta districts; fog in western parts

Residents Survey Damage In Chennai As Rains Subside

CHENNAI, INDIA - NOVEMBER 12: Pigeons fly over a mosque inundated by floodwater on November 12, 2021 in Chennai, India. As the rains and storm that battered the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu due to the depression over the Bay of Bengal subsided Friday, officials recorded at least 14 deaths in rain-related incidents across the state. The capital city of Chennai bore the brunt of the depression, with the rains flooding major roads and neighborhoods, disrupting power supply, delaying or halting flight operations on Thursday. Residents across Tamil Nadu can expect a mix of mild winter chill, patchy fog and isolated rainfall over the next couple of days, according to the latest advisory issued by the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC).

The weather department has forecast moderate early-morning fog in several western and north-western districts, particularly in hilly and interior regions. Areas including the Nilgiris, Salem, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Tirupathur, Vellore and Ranipet are likely to experience misty conditions during the pre-dawn and early morning hours.

Reduced visibility may affect commuters and motorists on highways and ghat roads, prompting authorities to advise caution during morning travel.

In contrast, parts of southern Tamil Nadu and the delta districts are expected to receive light rainfall on Thursday. The RMC has predicted scattered, light showers at one or two places in these regions. Karaikal and adjoining coastal areas may also witness brief spells of rain.

Although the rainfall is not expected to be intense, it could offer temporary relief from prevailing dry conditions and benefit standing crops in agricultural belts.

Elsewhere in Tamil Nadu and the Union Territory of Puducherry, dry weather is likely to persist. Skies are expected to remain largely clear to partly cloudy, with no major precipitation forecast across most interior and northern districts.

Meanwhile, temperatures across interior Tamil Nadu are projected to rise slightly in the coming days. Weather officials said maximum temperatures may remain above normal from Friday onwards, particularly in inland areas.

The warmer daytime conditions are likely to contrast with cooler mornings caused by fog and cloud cover, leading to noticeable fluctuations in temperature. Chennai, the state capital, is expected to witness partly cloudy skies, with no major rainfall forecast.

Overall, the state is set to experience varied weather patterns, ranging from foggy mornings in the western hills to light showers in the south, while most regions remain dry. Authorities have advised travellers, farmers and the general public to stay updated with local forecasts and take necessary precautions.
