New Delhi| The adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) replacing old vehicles in 44 cities in the country with a population of at least 1 million will save more than 51 billion liters of petrol and diesel by 2035. This would reduce India’s oil import bill by an estimated Rs 9.17 lakh crore ($106.6 billion). The new study by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) says the number of old vehicles in these 44 big cities will increase to 7.5 million by 2030. In 2024, they numbered 4.9 million. Older vehicles account for the highest share of air pollution in large cities.

Greenhouse gas emissions will reduce
Full EV adoption avoids 11.5 tones of PM 2.5 emissions every day by 2035. At the same time, greenhouse gas emissions could be reduced by the equivalent of 61 million tones of carbon dioxide. The authors of the report have proposed a plan to phase out 1.14 crore vehicles between 2030 and 2035.

3.7 lakh jobs will be created
Replacing old vehicles with EVs or adopting hybrid models of electric and CNG vehicles in big cities could create around 3.7 lakh new jobs in the country’s e-vehicle and renewable energy sector, TERI said in its report. If half of the old vehicles were converted to CNG vehicles, the authors said in their report, the country would need about 2,655 new CNG stations and an estimated 45,000 new employment opportunities.
