India has achieved a major milestone in its energy sector, recording 1 billion tonne (BT) coal production on March 20, for the second consecutive year, according to the Ministry of Coal.

The achievement reflects sustained efforts across the coal sector and highlights the country’s growing self-reliance in meeting its energy needs. The government said the milestone will help ensure uninterrupted fuel supply to key industries, particularly the power sector.

The increased production has enabled coal-based thermal power plants to maintain high stock levels, supporting stable electricity generation amid rising demand. Officials said the consistent output is the result of improved planning, efficient execution, and stronger coordination across the coal value chain.

The Ministry of Coal has also focused on policy measures aimed at enhancing transparency, boosting performance, and ensuring smooth operations across the sector. Continuous monitoring and close engagement with stakeholders have helped streamline supply and distribution.

The government said the sustained coal production aligns with its broader vision of building a resilient and self-reliant energy framework under the “Viksit Bharat 2047” roadmap. The focus remains on strengthening domestic production capabilities while supporting long-term economic growth.
