New Delhi| The Indian Industry Association (CII) stressed the need for ‘immediate reforms’ to address the rising pendency of cases across the country and suggested that the National Judicial Data Grid (NJDG) provide real-time ranking to states based on case settlement rates. Provide, so that the settlement of disputes can be expedited. CII said, more than five crore cases are pending in many courts in the country and at many places the case disposal rate is lagging behind the new filings, due to which reforms are needed soon to improve the disposal of cases.

With this, effective judicial reforms will be implemented
CII described the National Judicial Data Grid (NJDG) as an important initiative to reduce pending litigation, as it enables data-based policy interventions. Its objective is to promote a spirit of competition among the states, so that they improve their judicial process and adopt best practices. CII said that initially, states can be ranked on the basis of lawsuit settlement rate (ratio of cases settled and filings). This ranking can be displayed for the last 5-10 years. This will enable States to speed up their judicial processes and implement more effective judicial reforms.

The National Judicial Data Grid was launched in 2015 and aims to track, manage and reduce pending cases of lawsuits in courts. It is a public portal, which provides data related to status, pendency, and disposal of cases in Indian courts

Need to improve the functioning of NJDG-CII
CII also said that to make NJDG more effective, its functioning needs to be improved. This requires tracking how long it takes at different stages of lawsuits. In this way data-based policy interventions can be further improved, thus improving the judicial process.
