Central government approves Rs 2,642 crore railway project in Uttar Pradesh

New Delhi| The Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday approved the multi-tracking railway project passing through Varanasi and Chandauli districts in Uttar Pradesh with an estimated outlay of Rs 2,642 crore. The Cabinet meeting approved the construction of Varanasi-Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay Multi-Tracking Project, which includes a new rail-road bridge over river Ganga to increase connectivity. This will make travel easier. With this the logistics cost will also reduce.

The project is expected to be completed in four years. This will generate about 1 million man days of direct employment. The Varanasi-Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay Junction route is very important for both passenger and luggage transportation. There has been a lot of traffic on it due to transportation of coal, cement, food products and increased movement of passengers.

In view of this, the government needs to upgrade the infrastructure including a new rail-road bridge on the river Ganga and connecting the third and fourth railway lines. According to the Cabinet, the completion of this project is estimated to carry 27.83 million tones (MTPA) of freight per year in addition to relieving congestion.

According to the Cabinet, the multi-tracking project will extend the existing network of Indian Railways by about 30 km. The project aims to improve logistical efficiency by connecting unconnected sectors and enhancing transport networks, thereby improving supply chains and leading to faster economic growth. Earlier this month the Cabinet had approved the second phase of the Chennai Metro Rail project, which included three corridors with an outlay of Rs 63,246 crore.
In August the PM Modi-led cabinet approved eight national high-speed road corridor projects of 936 kilometers with a total investment of Rs 50,655 crore. The implementation of these eight projects will directly and indirectly generate an estimated 4.42 crore man days of employment.
