Asia’s largest imaging telescope ‘MACE’ inaugurated in Ladakh

New Delhi| To give further progress to scientific research, Asia’s largest imaging telescope has been launched in Ladakh. The name of this telescope is Major Atmospheric Cherenkov Experiment (MACE). Let us tell you that DAE i.e. Atomic Energy Department Secretary Ajit Kumar Mohanty inaugurated Asia’s largest imaging Cherenkov telescope in Hanle, Ladakh. With the help of this telescope, there will be more progress in scientific research. The telescope has been built by Mumbai-based BARC with the help of Electronics Corporation of India Limited (ECIL) and other Indian industry partners and has been indigenously built.
This telescope has been discussed since its inauguration. Situated at an altitude of 4,300 metres, it is the tallest telescope of its kind in the world which will now promote scientific research. DAE Secretary Ajit Kumar Mohanty explained that ‘MACE Observatory is a great achievement for India and it puts the country at the forefront of cosmic-ray research globally’ He further said that, the telescope will allow scientists to study high-energy gamma rays thereby paving the way for a deeper understanding of the most energetic phenomena in the universe. The MACE project not only plays an important role in advancing scientific research, but also supports the socio-economic development of Ladakh.

The opening of the MACE Observatory was a part of DAE’s Platinum Jubilee Year Programme. On 4 October at Hanle, Ladakh, Dr. Ajit Kumar Mohanty inaugurated the Major Atmospheric Cherenkov Experiment (MACE) Observatory.
