Surha Tal in UP’s Ballia designated as India’s 100th Ramsar site; PM Modi hails landmark
India has achieved a significant milestone in wetland conservation with the designation of the Jai Prakash Narayan Bird Sanctuary (Surha Tal) in Ballia district of Uttar Pradesh as the country’s 100th Ramsar Site.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the development and described it as a reflection of India’s strong commitment to protecting wetlands and biodiversity.
In a post on X, he said, “A century as far as Ramsar sites are concerned! Glad that the Jai Prakash Narayan Bird Sanctuary (Surha Tal) in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh has been designated as India’s 100th Ramsar site. This wetland is rich in avifaunal biodiversity, attracting several migratory and resident birds.”
“India’s unwavering commitment to protecting our natural surroundings and wetlands in particular is clearly reflected in this feat. Over the years, efforts to conserve and rejuvenate wetlands have been strengthened through greater community participation, science, innovation and awareness initiatives. These endeavours are helping preserve biodiversity, secure ecological balance and create a greener future for coming generations,” PM Modi added.
The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) also hailed the achievement, calling it a proud milestone in India’s conservation journey. The ministry said that with the inclusion of Surha Tal, India has reached the landmark figure of 100 Ramsar Sites, further strengthening the country’s efforts to protect ecologically important wetlands.
The ministry highlighted that every protected wetland contributes to biodiversity conservation, supports local livelihoods, and enhances climate resilience. Wetlands play a crucial role in maintaining ecological health by supporting wildlife habitats, regulating water cycles, and mitigating the impacts of climate change.
The Ramsar Convention is an international treaty aimed at the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands. India’s growing network of Ramsar Sites reflects the country’s increasing focus on environmental protection and sustainable ecosystem management.
