33 crore mobile phones being made every year in the country

New Delhi| India’s electronics sector is currently employing around 1.2 million people across the country, and between 32.5 and 33 crore mobile phones are being manufactured every year. Electronics manufacturing has grown rapidly in the last 10 years in the country. It was Rs 1.9 lakh crore in FY 2014-15 which increased to Rs 9.52 lakh crore in 2023-24 (with an annual average growth rate of 17.4 per cent). During this period, exports have also seen an increase of 22.7 per cent.
IT Ministry Secretary S.Krishnan on 10th anniversary of ‘Make in India’ initiative. Krishnan said electronics has emerged as one of the most influential sectors. “Exports from India in the electronics manufacturing sector have also increased from around Rs 38,263 crore in 2014-15 to Rs 2.41 lakh crore at a CAGR of 22.7 per cent”, he said. This is significantly faster than growth in other export sectors.”
In the year 2014-15, only 26 percent of the mobile phones sold in the country were made in India, the rest were imported. Today, 99.2 percent of mobile phones sold in India are made in the country. Krishnan explained, “We make 32.5 to 33 crore mobile phones every year in India and on average there are around one billion mobile phones in use”. We promoted the domestic market. That’s why you see mobile phone exports have increased significantly.”
Exports of mobile phones were worth around Rs 1.2 lakh crore in FY 2023-24 which has increased 77 times compared to 2014-15. Mobile phone exports were worth around Rs 1,566 crore in FY 2014-15.
On the PLI scheme for the mobile sector, the Secretary said that we have exceeded our production target and the total production has reached Rs 6.61 lakh crore. The total value of the investment is also Rs 9,100 crore, well above the target.
“A total of 1,22,613 people have been employed, which is in line with the basic target of the scheme”, Krishnan said. So this is one of the big achievements of Make in India and today the electronic sector employs close to 12 lakh people across the country
Establishing a semiconductor manufacturing base in the country has been the second major part of ‘Make in India’. The foundation of semiconductor manufacturing is being laid with the launch of Bharat Semiconductor Mission and five major projects approved. These projects include two projects by Micron, Tata Electronics, a project by CG Power and a project by Keynes.
