₹8,000 Crore Push for J&K: Roads, Women Empowerment & Farming Get Major Boost

In a major development push for Jammu & Kashmir, Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Tuesday handed over approval for road projects worth ₹3,566 crore under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY-IV) (Batch-II) to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah at a programme in Srinagar.

The initiative is part of a broader ₹8,000 crore investment in rural road connectivity for the Union Territory within a year, aimed at linking remote habitations and accelerating inclusive development.

Speaking at the event, Chouhan said the Centre, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is committed not only to building roads but also to “connecting hearts,” emphasizing that both “Delhi’s doors and hearts are open” for Jammu & Kashmir. He noted that the region has been prioritized in successive phases of the PMGSY-IV , reflecting sustained focus on infrastructure development.

Alongside road connectivity, the government also announced a major boost for women’s empowerment, releasing a “Mother Sanction” of over ₹4,568 crore under the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana–National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY). Chouhan reiterated the goal of transforming women into successful entrepreneurs, beyond the “Lakhpati Didi” initiative.

Highlighting agriculture as a key driver of economic growth in the region, Chouhan outlined plans to promote integrated and scientific farming. He announced that experts from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research will study Jammu & Kashmir’s soil, climate, and resources to develop a comprehensive agricultural roadmap. Measures such as improved planting material, crop diversification, and high-quality nurseries are also on the agenda.

Chouhan stressed that integrated farming combining agriculture with allied activities like animal husbandry, fisheries, and beekeeping can significantly enhance farmers’ incomes, especially in regions with small landholdings and challenging terrain.

Welcoming the announcement, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah termed the ₹8,000 crore sanction “historic” and assured swift implementation of the projects. He highlighted the transformative role of road connectivity in Jammu & Kashmir’s hilly and dispersed geography, noting that earlier phases of PMGSY have already improved access to schools, healthcare, and markets.

Abdullah said the state government will work closely with the Centre to ensure timely execution of the projects and maximize benefits for rural communities, farmers, and women-led Self-Help Groups.

The event was attended by senior government officials, public representatives, and beneficiaries, marking a significant step toward strengthening rural infrastructure, livelihoods, and inclusive growth in Jammu & Kashmir.
